Why Being Overweight Can Cause Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Erectile dysfunction and obesity.

Erectile dysfunction and obesity.

When a man suffers from erectile dysfunction (ED), he simply finds it difficult or impossible to have an erect penis or maintain one while engaging in sexual activity. Obesity and erectile dysfunction (ED) often move hand in hand. The average man increases his risks of developing erectile dysfunction (ED) if he is obese. Here are the reasons why you increase your risks of developing erectile dysfunction(ED) if you are obese or overweight:

  1. Lowers testosterone levels: Obesity has the power to significantly lower a man’s testosterone levels. If you don’t know what testosterone is, it is simply a male sex hormone that performs a number of functions, including stimulating the production of sperm and boosting a man’s sex drive (desire to engage in sexual activity). When testosterone levels are low in a man, then that greatly affects his desire to have sex, his ability to get a proper erection and ultimately his ability to perform very well sexually. Since obesity is capable of lowering testosterone levels in a man, it goes without saying that it can easily lead to erectile dysfunction.
  2. Can prevent the penis from getting enough blood to produce an erection: Another reason why being overweight can easily cause a man to suffer from erectile dysfunction is simply because it can negatively affect his blood vessels. Before I continue, it is important that readers know that before a man’s penis can become erect, the blood vessels that lead to the penis have to dilate and become filled with blood. According to experts, obesity can damage a part of the lining of the blood vessels called the endothelium. When the endothelium is damaged, then the penis ends up being unable to get sufficient blood supply in order for an erection to occur or to be sustained.
  3. Obesity leads to other diseases that cause erectile dysfunction: A man who is obese or overweight often increases his risk of developing grave conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure (hypertension), atherosclerosis (blood vessels that are clogged). And these conditions are known to be among the major causes of erectile dysfunction. Simply put, even if you are not obese but are suffering from any of the aforementioned conditions, you increase your risk of ending up with erectile dysfunction because those conditions cause erectile dysfunction on their own.  And combining obesity with any of the grave conditions mentioned makes things even worse with regard to experiencing erectile dysfunction.
  4. Obesity can cause depression: It is a known fact that obesity can make people feel bad about themselves, which easily leads to depression. And depression on its own can easily interfere with sexual feelings and cause erectile dysfunction.

If you are obese and are suffering from erectile dysfunction, it is quite possible that your inability to maintain a proper erection during sexual intercourse is as a result of your excess fat. The best way to combat the problem is by using a healthy diet and regular exercise to reduce weight so you can start enjoying sex the way it is meant to. You can also use drugs to such as Viagra to achieve your goal of getting and maintaining an erection. But you should know that using Viagra only gives you a temporary solution to your problem. Personally I recommend hitting the gym and watching the things that you eat.
